Dream Work for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know

Ello my loves!

Recently, I attended an awesome healing retreat called The Healer You Are by my incredible new friends Golbahar and Ivy with Akashic Resources. One of the first things we did during the retreat was to remember and analyze our dreams. I have a passion for dreamwork and have been studying them since I was child. Thats around 30 years of dreamwork experience, so… being a self-prescribed Dream Doula, I had some helpful tips for everyone. My bunkmate Angela (and founder of an amazing environmental nonprofit Plant Your Roots), hadn’t remembered her dreams for 20 years! However, with the help of the group she did finally remember a dream that very night! After the retreat, she reached out and asked me to help her interpret another new dream she experienced. With Angelas permission, I’m sharing our correspondence with readers because it’s perfect for anyone who wants to begin to interpret their dreams.

You are born to fly, and in dreams you remember the soul has wings.

What follows is the E-mail correspondence between Angela and I after our healing retreat.

Angela:

Hello Beauty!

Sounds like you are still energized as I am! Not having really had a dream in the past 20 years, I don’t understand the meaning of them lol. You seem to know and love to follow their meanings.

What are some resources that you feel are truly in line with our spiritual path, that will assist me with finding the meaning in my dreams now that I am having them again! I know I can always google it, but I find sometimes I look for the ‘right’ google answer that fits my emotional needs at the time and that doesn’t seem like the way it should be.

Last night, I kept seeing a long teaspoon in my dream. and I remember saying to myself, I am dreaming, remember the teaspoon. lol It was really long, like probably ten inches. It had a twisted silver handle, and it was very shiny and pretty. Then later on, I was putting away dishes. I do not recall specifically what dishes, just that I was putting them in cupboards. What on earth does that mean? lol

Cheyenne:

Ello my love! Haha I’ve done that before where I was aware or awake enough to say, “remember this obvious dream symbol!” and then go back to sleep.

The first thing I do for an interpretation is notice how I feel when I wake up, and if I have any idea off the top of my head what it meant. The first thing that comes to my mind is Joey from friends telling Ross to “grab a spoon!” However, this is not usually reliable.

FRIENDS: Joey to Ross: “Grab a Spoon”

The following is the most effective and easiest way I have found to do my dreamwork in my busy day to day life.

I write down as many keywords as I can remember. It helps to try and look them up in order of appearance in your dream. I depend on this site called Dreammoods to find the meanings of each keyword. I don’t know what I’d do without this thorough dream dictionary, I love it!

So, teaspoon-silver-handle-shiny-pretty-dishes-kitchen-housecleaning-cupboards When generating keywords, think: Colors, who, what, when, where, what house, what room, time of day, ambiance, feeling, and especially- weird random glorified objects like a teaspoon. LOL! Trust your first gut feeling on which keywords you want to look up. The more you look up, the more objective you can be because there will usually be a common thread of some kind between all the keywords. Often, we interpret from an emotional place and think our dreams mean worse things than they actually do. This is why it’s so important to look up the symbols. You will usually understand exactly what it means because you are going through the exact same thing in your waking life. It’s really cool how our dreams will take our waking lives and paint them out in a fun creative way while we sleep. When looking up your keywords and symbols,

Attention and intention are the most powerful tools of the spiritually adept. They are the triggers for attracting both a certain kind of energy and a certain kind of information.”

[Here, I basically copy and paste what’s relevant to Angela’s Dream from the online dream dictionaries I trust the most.]

Tea To dream that you are making or drinking tea represents satisfaction and contentment in your life. You are taking your time with regards to some relationship or situation. Alternatively, the dream signifies tranquility, serenity, calmness, and respect.

Spoon To see a spoon in your dream refers to a reciprocal relationship where you need to give and receive nourishment. You or someone is being given special treatment. Also consider the phrase “born with a silver spoon in your mouth” to mean that you have a life of privilege.

To dream of a teaspoon

Dreammoods didn’t specifically have “teaspoon”, so I tried one of my favorite back-up sites, dream glossary. They said the following:

Dreaming of a teaspoon symbolizes a comfortable life.

You are someone who is moderate in everything you do and can control your feelings and desires. That is not always easy for you, but the satisfaction you feel in the end is a reason enough for you to stay true to yourself and sacrifice yourself for bigger goals.

And teaspoon from another great site, Aunty flo.

As a tea leaf symbol, a spoon represents finding useful information, friendships, or situations.

When you happen to see a spoon in the teacup, it means that you have superb methods which you can use to gather information on business ideas. As the spoon is part of cutlery, it indicates carefully tracking your own goals and setting them. Think big. Don’t hide away in life due to a lack of confidence.
If you would like to explore deeper, Aunty Flo goes into more depth here: Spoon: Symbol In Tea Leaf Dictionary | Auntyflo.com

It’s very beneficial to take the time and read all the interpretations in the beginning of learning dreamwork because it will help you understand the symbology and “the big picture” and will help home in on your intuition. When that happens its magical, because you begin to see the symbols all around you even in your wakeful dream.

I’m not just talking about analyzing symbols from a dream but bringing the dream into life. I’m talking about seeing the world around you as a waking dream where the symbols and synchronicities will speak to you if you pay attention. That’s why I call it active dreaming because it’s about getting active with all our dreams can be.

Silver To see silver in your dream symbolizes the moon, intuition, and the feminine aspects of yourself. It signifies tranquility and understated confidence.

Handle To see a handle in your dream suggests that you are in control of the situation. The dream may a metaphor indicating that you have a “handle” on a situation or on life. If the handle is broken, then it may mean that you need to get a handle on who you are. Draw on your inner strength.

Shiny To see something shiny in your dream represents your potential that has yet to be unleashed. Consider the significance of the shiny object as it holds something important.

Pretty I couldn’t find anything on a “pretty spoon” or pretty object”, (only “pretty people” or “if you’re feeling pretty) but it most likely symbolizes a positive thing and from the context clues (shiny), I think it is kind of like a mirror for yourself. You are feeling pretty inside and out. Considering these, what do you think “long” means when it pertains to you? Perseverance? Standing tall? What about “twisted”? Do you have a twisted side or a twisted way of handling some things? bahaha!

Dishes (please disregard what doesn’t fit) To see dishes in your dream represent ideas, concepts, and attitudes. The dream may be a pun on the things you are “dishing” out to others. Or it could describe someone you are interested in as in someone who is a “dish”. Perhaps it is time that you make the first move. If the dishes are dirty and unwashed, then it signifies dissatisfaction and an unpromising outlook. You may have overlooked some problems in your life, or you have not confronted your emotions.
To dream that you are washing dishes suggest that you are moving on and planning for the next thing that comes your way. Alternatively, it represents your daily routine. Perhaps you are in a rut.
To see shelves of polished dishes, suggest that you are doing your best and making the best out of a situation. You are trying to make a good impression.
To see broken dishes or break dishes in your dream signify feelings of poverty, lack, and inadequacy. You may feel that you are not meeting the expectations of others.

Kitchen To see a kitchen in your dream signifies your need for warmth, spiritual nourishment and/or some emotional healing. It may also symbolize the nurturing mother and how you are there for your loved ones. Alternatively, the kitchen represents a transformation; something new or life altering is about to occur. The dream could also be telling you that if “you can’t stand the heat, then you need to get out of the kitchen”. In other words, it is time to abort your plans.

Housework To dream that you are doing housework suggests that you are making changes in your lifestyle and the way you are living. You are doing away with your old ways and habits and starting anew. Alternatively, the dream may just be a reflection of the monotony of your daily life. Do something adventurous.

Cupboard To dream that you are opening a cupboard signifies that you are revealing some hidden truth or secret. To dream that you are closing the cupboard or putting something away inside the cupboard, indicates that there is something you are trying to hide. You are refusing to confront some issue or problem.

Just because I’m being super thorough, here’s some info on “ten” because of the spoon being around “10 inches”.

The important things usually prove to be very simple. They are also open secrets in the sense that no one is hiding the knowledge from us except ourselves.

It’s important to recognize which themes repeat themselves. If you’re keeping a journal circle all the themes and meanings that are similar. Hold on to those messages and meditate on them throughout the day. Try to be aware during your waking dream of any other signs and synchronicities around you.

Living by synchronicity isn’t merely about getting messages. It is about growing the poetic consciousness that allows us to taste and touch what rhymes and resonates in the world we inhabit, and how the world-behind-the-world reveals itself by fluttering the veils of our consensual reality.

Hope this helps. It’s a process that I’ve evolved over the last… 28 years! I’ve read soooo many dream books over the years, here’s some of my faves… Obviously, I’m a huge fan of dream expert Robert Moss. But there is a variety of different great authors on the subject.
